A useful sun hat shades the areas a baseball cap may leave exposed: the ears, sides of the face and neck. Begin with coverage and fit, then choose a style for the activity. A hat works alongside shade, protective clothing and sunscreen on uncovered skin; it is not complete protection by itself.

Wide brim or neck cape?

AAD's clothing guidance recommends a wide-brimmed hat. Look at the brim around the whole head rather than judging coverage from a front photograph. A neck cape can add coverage for fishing, gardening or a long walk. A narrow bucket brim may be easy to wear in town but leave more skin exposed.

The Sunday Afternoons Adventure Hat is a confirmed example combining a brim and neck cape with a stated UPF rating. That illustrates a construction choice, not a test-based claim that it is the best hat for every activity. Compare the current model's specifications and fit information.

Make the activity decide

For gardening, think about your neck when bending and whether the brim obstructs your view of the ground. For golf, check that you can turn your head and swing without the hat interfering. For fishing or windy walks, consider the retention arrangement and whether you can adjust it comfortably. A large floppy brim that suits lounging may be distracting during active movement.

For travel, distinguish a genuinely packable construction from a hat that merely fits inside a suitcase. Follow the maker's packing instructions; do not assume every straw brim will recover after being folded. A compact hat that loses its useful shape is a poor trade for luggage space.

Fabric and comfort

UPF describes protection through the rated fabric, not every patch of skin around the hat. Check the claimed rating for the exact model. Loose woven straw, mesh panels and decorative openings require closer inspection than a solid appearance in a photograph. Fabric labels alone do not establish cooling, water resistance or durability.

Measure your head and compare the size chart. Try the hat with your usual hairstyle or glasses if possible. It should stay in position without uncomfortable pressure and leave your view clear. Check the care label before washing: straw, cotton and synthetic constructions may require different handling. Choose the hat you can wear through the actual activity, with the coverage you need.
