Children's hiking boots should be chosen from the child's current measurements and the terrain of the trip. Age is not a substitute for the manufacturer's size chart or an actual fit check.

Product and fit checks
Check both feet and try the boots with the socks the child will wear. Follow the maker's fitting guidance and look for the space and secure closure it recommends. Do not buy an excessively loose boot on the assumption that growth allowance always improves value.
Have the child operate the closure where appropriate and check whether it stays arranged as the product instructions require. Consider the socks and clothing used on the planned trip rather than a fit trial with unrelated footwear layers. Inspect fit again as the child grows; the fact that a pair fitted on an earlier outing does not establish that it remains suitable months later.
Choosing for your use
Compare closures the child can manage, boot height and the product's intended use. A waterproof version and a non-waterproof version can have different constructions; confirm the exact model. NPS includes suitable footwear in hiking preparation, but does not endorse a particular children's boot or age-to-model chart.
Weight, outsole and the planned surface
Compare the boot's stated weight in the relevant size and whether the figure describes one boot or a pair. The amount a child carries in a bag is separate from what they wear on their feet. Examine the outsole pattern and the maker's stated use alongside the actual route: a smooth walking path, loose trail and rocky ground pose different selection questions. Check sole flexibility and construction during a permitted fit trial, without treating deep-looking lugs or a rubber label as a guarantee against slipping. Plan an appropriate route as well as appropriate footwear.
Handling and planning
Allow time to check comfort before a long outing and inspect the feet and fit during ordinary use. Plan the route around the child's abilities as well as the footwear. Follow the boot's cleaning and drying instructions after mud or water exposure. A hiking boot purchase does not establish that any trail or distance is appropriate for every child.
If the child wears an orthotic or other prescribed insert, ask the relevant practitioner and footwear maker about fit rather than assuming the standard size chart accounts for it.
